Dávid Merényi — This Is Where We Live, This Is How We Live
24 November 2026 – 9 December 2026
Budapest’s worn doorways, intricate stairwells and secluded courtyards become places of discovery in Dávid Merényi’s paintings. His exhibition at Equora Spaces invites us to linger over familiar surroundings, tracing the human presence held in their surfaces and the fleeting nature of our own place within them.

Dávid Merényi turns his attention to Budapest’s distinctive buildings, entrances and interiors. Worn wood, glass, metal and tiles emerge through contrasting ways of handling paint, reaching beyond observation to explore the essential character of everyday spaces.
His paintings reveal the patient act of looking and the sensitive choices it involves. Some elements are barely suggested; others receive detailed attention. Just as our eyes cannot focus on everything at once, the paintings guide us between areas of clarity and ambiguity. Carefully adjusted tones and variations in surface transform familiar urban scenes through the particular possibilities of painting.
Human presence remains palpable even when no figures appear. These spaces bear the traces of those who shaped them, long after their makers have gone. Within Budapest’s elaborately crafted stairwells, silence takes on an almost sacred quality, turning our attention inward and offering a momentary awareness of the transience of our own existence.
Approaching the city’s crumbling courtyards and weathered interiors with curiosity and affection, Merényi finds subtle differences within their shared architectural vocabulary. For those who live in Budapest, these places may be immediately recognisable. Yet even without knowing their locations, we may feel we have been there before. Their familiarity opens onto a deeper encounter with painting itself: with how we look, what we notice and what stays with us.
